Jewellery Photography for your jewellery business.
Where do you find a specialist jewellery photographer?
You may already have collected information on jewellery photograohers from direct mail leaflets and emails, from credits on brochures you admire, or simply by word of mouth. Google and the other search engines are also useful. All photographers have websites, so the internet could be a good place, you think. Unfortunately, the Internet has no way of discriminating between good and bad, mediocre or uninspired or the simply brilliant.
If you have the budget to afford it, I would strongly recommend finding a designer, a design or branding agency or an advertising agency. But preferably choose a firm who has a proven track record. A design agency, for example, will either have worked with a jewellery photographer previously, or they will have the know-how to select from a few expert photographers in the field.
If you are doing your own search on the Internet, choose a photographer who inspires you, whose website looks professional, someone who knows how to do justice to the jewellery. Your business instinct will probably tell you who is the right photographer for you. I am a strong believer in gut feelings, they are almost always right, particularly when we learn to separate them from other considerations, such as those based on price. You will find vast categories in quality and pricing.
Be very careful not to imitate your competition and not to go for whatever the majority are doing. Seek to distinguish yourself, look beyond your current situation and into the future where you want your business to be. Set yourself a reasonable budget. It is better to have a few outstanding pictures of your jewellery than many mediocre ones. Think, ‘less is more’ as it is almost always true. It is the outstanding pieces, shown to their best, that catch the eye of your prospective customer. You don’t need me to tell you what is outstanding. You will feel it the minute you see it even if you are not a creative or artistic person.
Follow your heart and think: if this image and this piece of jewellery grabs me, it is also likely to grab somebody else. If you are indifferent, or bored and unexcited, other people may also feel like you.
To summarise:
-Set yourself a generous budget. Proper jewellery photography is not cheap, you can’t have both cheap and good. Good photographers are in demand and command higher prices.
-Find yourself a professional designer or design company, they will steer you in the right direction.
-Choose a photographer whose work truly inspires you. Look at his track record, his clients. Meet him in person. Form a business relationship.
-Seek to distinguish yourself from the competition, don’t copy, be innovative and get inspiration from the best.
