The  jewellery creations of the past are presented as inspirational objects/wearable museums full of information about past cultures, materials and techniques. The  impact of historical trends on contemporary  jewellery is also analysed, showing how past creative trends can inspire the future. Beyond historical influences, students explore medium and short term fashion cycles that  affect jewellery and learn how to anticipate coming colour , material and thematic trends.

Students studying  jewellery of the past gain insight into how the fabrication limitations and beliefs of the time influenced jewellery design and how similar concepts in today’s fashion and jewellery can be applied. As new fabrication methods, materials and cultural concepts develop, students are encouraged to consider how similar evolutions affected previous eras of  jewellery  and use this information to produce avant-garde and trend setting designs.

Overview of important periods related to Jewellery

This overview showcases the different materials, technologies, cultures and mindsets that produced the jewellery of the past. The relationship between geography and materials is explained and ways to gather inspiration from past eras are highlighted.

Jewellery from the Bronze Age and earlier
Basic yet powerful, the jewellery of the earliest humans was both ornamental and ceremonial. Materials and many forms of primitive beauty among the first tribes of  hunter-gatherers are presented.

The Ancient World: 3000BC to 700AD
The increase in  trade between emerging civilizations meant new materials and markets for jewellery craftsmen. The creations of the Mediterranean cultures, especially Egypt and Greece, are explored.

Jewellery of the Middle Ages 800AD to 1500 AD
The overwhelming effects of Christianity and the Roman Empire on jewellery are examined. Simultaneously, important Asiatic contributions from China, the Indian Subcontinent and African cultures are also noted. The rise of manufacturing processes and improved stone cutting are also covered.

The Renaissance and Baroque Periods
The developments that led to what we now know as ‘Baroque Pearls’ are revealed Pendants and brooches exemplifying the Renaissance themes of animals and naturalism are also analysed.

Rococo, Victorian and Belle Epoque Eras
Increased trade among the cities of Europe led to a burst of trends, such as the “hair jewellery” of the Romantic Period. Arabesques, cameos, mosaic jewellery and other historic jewellery concepts originated in this dynamic period.

Art Nouveau: 1890-1914
Departing from the classicism which preceded it, Art  Nouveau  defined a new era full of flowing, organic shapes and floral  motifs. Enameling and elaborate wire work are among the techniques used to celebrate nature and depict fantasy.

Edwardian Period: early 20th century
Sensual and feminine, the Edwardian era replaced the conservatism of the Victorian era. Signature design elements include intricate filigree and copious use  of gemstones as well as the rise of the white metals-platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Art Deco: 1920-1940
The influence of modern architecture on Art Deco jewellery is revealed, especially in regard to the style’s use of clean lines and strong contrasts. Examples of Art Deco’s distinctive use of gemstones and metals are analysed.

Retro Period: 1940-1960

Just what is this incredible material?!

What is Metal Clay?!

‘Metal clay’ is a new jewellery technology that comes from advances in powder metallurgy. It is composed of pure silver particles, water and binders. In this form it is soft and malleable like plasticine: very easy to sculpt into any shape you can imagine. When your design is ready, you ‘fire’ the piece – raising it to high temperatures and causing the water and binders to evaporate and the metal particles to ‘sinter’ or fuse together, leaving a solid metal jewellery design! In this Silver-jewellery making workshop, you will use Silver Metal Clay, and produce a design in pure silver (999 silver, more pure than sterling or 925 silver!)

Precious Metals: Powder Metallurgy

Precious metals powder metallurgy has revolutionized the jewellery-making process. Called ‘metal clays’ these powdered metal mixtures are initially as soft as clay. After they are fired, however, they become metal such as Pure Silver, 22k Gold, Bronze and Copper. The speed and creative options presented by metal clays have captivated a large international following of both jewellery artists and industry professionals. JDMIS maintains an excellent relationship with the manufacturers of these amazing products and exclusively offers its students the most up-to-date techniques regarding their use.

Metal Clay use is both an art and a science, allowing students to focus on creative expression instead of outdated techniques or expensive tools. Students are given instruction and then, with expert advice and guidance, immediately begin to design and create pure silver pieces that incorporate multiple techniques and unique design possibilities..

For centuries, the art of making jewellery has been the monopoly of traditional ‘kaarigars’ or goldsmiths who have inherited the expertise from their ancestors and have played the dual role of designer and manufacturer. During those days, jewellery designing as a career had been limited to the kaarigars and one could learn this profession only by becoming an apprentice to an experienced jeweller. The students after completing the course can find excellent career options in jewellery designing house, export house, fashion house, freelance designing or at the same time opening their own production house. One can also find employment with the renowned names in jewellery brands such as Gili, Enchante, Nakshatra, Tanishq, D-damas and Swarovski.

Making of jewelry requires a wide variety of skills, which involves training and creativity. The work in the jewellery industry involves casting and molding of jewellery, and the identification and testing of jewellery and gemstones. Designing, Manufacturing and Marketing are the major tasks performed. One can work in the industry as a Designer, join the Manufacturing section, Retailing department and even specialize in Gemology and deal with identification and grading of various precious stones and diamonds.

The designer prepares sketches of the design on a paper by hand or on the computer to conceputalise the design. After consulting with the customer or the manufacturing team, the designers make detailed drawings, a structural model, computer stimulations or a full-scale prototype. Then these designs are created out of the regular or floral patterns and then forms are generated by connecting different structures together. In the manufacturing process, a model of the design is prepared by shaping the metal or by carving wax and the individual parts are soldered together. After that, finishing works like setting stone or gems, polishing, engraving etc are done.

Nowadays, computer-aided design (CAD) software’s are used in the manufacturing firms to facilitate product design and to avoid flaws during the designing process. CAD allows to create a virtual-reality model of a piece of jewelry and the designers can modify the design, change the stone or try a different setting and see the changes on a computer screen before cutting a stone or performing other costly steps. After that a mold of the prepared model is produced in a wax like or other material with the help of Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) process. CAM helps in the easier manufacturing of numerous pieces of the same design which are then distributed to retail establishments across the country.

The most essential factor in getting a job is to present a strong portfolio of the work. More than qualification, it is the skills and experience that makes an excellent jewellery designer. Graduates in jewellery designing with excellent skills are in great demand in India and abroad. After successful completion of a course in jewellery designing, one can find outstanding job prospects in various jewellery manufactures & designing houses, export houses and renowned jewellery brand names such as Nakshatra, Tanishq, D-damas, Swarovski, Gili, Tribhuvandas Bhimji Zaveri to name a few. One can opt for setting up their own Design Studio and workshop; or can also work as a freelance designer.

Most designers start their career in jewellery industry as apprentices in showrooms or in their family businesses. As they gain more skill in jewellery design and repair, they may take advantage of opportunities to specialize in a specific area of the field such as goldsmithing, wax carving or stone setting. One can start their own business with a couple of years experience, or once they have evolved their unique style and has the ability to identify and rate a good gem or a stone. Jewellery designer should be well aware of the current trends and carry on with the latest models and styles.

Since most vacancies in this field are not advertised, it is handy for a designer to make a good contact network within the industry by attending trade fairs and exhibitions. Some of the career prospects in the field of jewellery designing are :
