Chennai Retail Jewellers Sales Staff Training

CHENNAI: Jewellery retailing is not about selling of gold and gemstones anymore. With gold price volatility and increased instances of theft, jewellers are training their frontline staff on finer aspects of gold selling that include calculation during buyback, computation of TCS (tax collection at source) when jewellery sale exceeds a certain limit (Rs 5 lakh in cash) to other larger aspects like need of jeweller insurance.

Recently, the All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) organized a daylong workshop christened ‘Labham’ in Chennai.

The event saw participation of 45 jewellers and the workshop focused on finance, banking, taxation, accounting and regulatory compliance, operations management and standardization and certification procedures.
“Our industry is fairly large and highly fragmented. We believe that compliance and business practice related topics are extremely important in today’s business. We wanted to create a platform where our members could educate themselves on these topics.

The whole idea is to empower participants to run their business in a more professional manner,” Manish Jain, vice-chairman, GJF said.

The Indian gems and jeweller market is estimated to be Rs 4 lakh crore with GJF having a membership base of around six lakh jewellers. Moving forward, GJF plans a national rollout of this programme across 16 cities with 100 jewellers expected to participate in each of these locations.

Chennai-based Original Kerala Jewellers constantly sends its senior front line staff that has put in over seven years of work to training programmes conducted by jewellery federations. “These executives in turn train the others at the store,” Babu Emmanuel, managing partner, OKJ, said.

Also, with the emergence of new distribution models such as online selling of jewellery, companies are resorting to training their customer executives on query handling from customers. For instance, online jewellery CaratLane resorts to year round training of its customer service executives. This includes refresher courses every month.

“Online jewellery selling is an evolving business. Our training revolves around soft skills, exchange policy and situational training for executives across all three modes, call, chat and email. We also frequently do audit checks on interaction evaluation to assess gaps in training and resort to process change,” Radhika Mcgregor, vice-president, customer relations, Caratlane said.

In the same way, another online diamond retailer ZaAmor has an in house training division that focuses on continuous education and training of its executives who take customer calls. “The training covers product knowledge, order processing, calculation of rates and pricing among others,” Vummidi Amarendra, managing director, ZaAmor said.

Jewelry design is the art or profession of creating, crafting, fabricating, or renderingdesigns for jewelry. This is an ancient practice of the goldsmith or metalworker that evolved to a billion-dollar industry with the odyssey from ancient cultures into the machine age. Jewelry design falls under the category of what is commonly known as “functional art,” being art that can be worn or used.
Before an article of jewelry is created, design concepts are rendered followed by detailed technical drawings generated by a jewelry designer, a professional who is trained in the architectural and functional knowledge of fabrication techniques, composition, wearability and market trends.

Traditional hand-drawing and drafting methods are still utilized in designing jewelry particularly at the conceptual stage, but a shift is taking place to computer-aided design programs like Rhinoceros 3D and Matrix.

Once conceptual/ideation is complete, the design is rendered and fabricated using the necessary materials for proper adaptation to the function of the object. For example, 24Kgold was used in ancient jewelry design because it was more accessible than silver as source material. Before the 1st century many civilizations also incorporated beads into jewelry. Once the discovery of gemstones and gem cutting became more readily available, the art of jewelry ornamentation and design shifted. The earliest documented gemstone cut was done by Theophilus Presbyter (c. 1070 – 1125), who practiced and developed many applied arts and was a known goldsmith. Later, during the 14th Century, medieval lapidary technology evolved to include cabochons and cameos.

Early Jewelry design commissions were often constituted by nobility or the church to honor an event or as wearable ornamentation. Within the structure of early methods,enameling and repoussé became standard methods for creating ornamental wares to demonstrate wealth, position, or power. These early techniques created a specific complex design element that later would forge the baroque movement in jewelry design.

Objective of this course is to equip the students with basic skills to sketch & render
Jewellery in an attractive and realistic manner. This will help them in communicating
Their design ideas and information to the clients, product development departments or artisans.

Basic knowledge about precious metals and their alloy manufacturing techniques, precious gem stones and diamonds, the types of setting along with related information about different jewellery products, terms, Measurements and other specifications provide the student with guidelines about practical aspects of Jewellery.

Knowledge and principles of form development along with the application in Jewellery
Product will lead the students to the fundamentals of methodical working and creativity.
It also enhances an ability to judge and evaluate any creative work.

Jewellery designing is an art – a unique and intriguing art. But this art was closely guarded earlier, confined to select few artisans or ‘kaarigars’ and handed down generation to generation.

Now with the recent boom and opening up of the branded market, jewel design is flourishing like never before. And it’s no longer restricted to designing traditional gold and diamond pieces either.

This ever-growing industry offers immense opportunities for exclusive, contemporary, stylised and designer jewellery in keeping with latest fashion trends. Not to forget striking prospects in semi-precious and costume jewellery as well.

All in a Day’s Work

Jewellery design is one of the most creative professions where you get to craft innovative jewels right from conceptualising the style and design, drawing sketches, fashioning detailed drawings to preparing structural models, computer simulations or sometimes even a full-scale prototype.

This requires you to understand the market, identify the consumer needs, visualise ideas to suit the demand and create impressive presentations to communicate your idea clearly.

But the job doesn’t end with designing. Jewellery artists also have to be involved hands-on in the actual manufacturing process where craftsmen use specialised hand tools and equipments to turn the designs into exquisite, flawless pieces!

Getting Started

Formal training is essential for refining this creative skill. Both Bachelor and Masters Degree of Fine Arts include jewellery designing. Or you can opt for a diploma or certificate course offered by numerous specialist institutes in India. There are long-term, short-term and even online/distance learning programs varying from a few weeks to one to two years. Course costs ranges from Rs.10, 000 to a lakh plus depending on the type of program.

These courses impart knowledge about drawing skills, design themes, colour science, diverse kinds of stones, environmental exposure, form and space, presentation, jewellery costing and fashion trends. Some even include computer-aided programs for designing jewellery and accessories. Jewellery CAD eliminates tiring efforts of umpteen redesigning on paper and imparts flexibility of exploring numerous alternatives.

These courses not only hone your designing skills, but also help you learn the basics of jewellery making techniques right from metal textures, stone settings, casting, cutting, polishing to even engraving, enamelling and electroplating. It also includes identification of gems/diamonds and testing quality of precious metals/stones. In fact, this rudimentary knowledge is crucial for becoming a good designer.

Apart from designing, you can also choose to specialise in other streams like jewellery manufacturing, gemmology, diamond grading, etc.

What it takes?

Generally, a school level or 10+2 background is essential. An art background or an internship with a design studio/jewellery designer can give you a head start in the competitive industry.

What it takes is a penchant for jewels and a flair for design. A creative and imaginative mind with an eye for detail and colours is essential. You have to be meticulous as nothing but perfection is acceptable. Being able to work with patience and concentration is also important.

It goes without saying that you have to be well-versed with the fashion scene and stay updated with the changing trends.

Career Prospects

Besides designing there is plethora of career options in jewellery design houses, fashion houses, export houses, antique/art auction houses etc. Big names like Tanishq, Swarvoski, DeBeers and D’damas regularly scout for remarkable talent.

You can choose to work as an in-house artist, freelance or be a self-employed entrepreneur. Or specialise in any particular aspect of jewellery making like goldsmith, bench jeweller, lapidary, quality assurance consultant, diamond and gemstone grader, etc. But as vacancies in this field are not advertised much, you have to build and maintain a good network in the industry.

Generally, jewellery designers start small by designing for the mass market and then move to custom designs as they gain prominence. And once you build your own inimitable style, you can even launch your own line or open your store!

Starting pay packets range from Rupees10-12,000 depending on the type of work. Pay packages/incentives keep rising with top designers raking in lakhs a month.

With talent, skill, initiative and experience on your side, there is literally no limit to what you can achieve! So, unleash your imagination and love for all that glitters by converting your passion into a fascinating, rewarding and fulfilling profession

Jewellery Photography for your jewellery business.

Where do you find a specialist jewellery photographer?

You may already have collected information on jewellery photograohers from direct mail leaflets and emails, from credits on brochures you admire, or simply by word of mouth. Google and the other search engines are also useful. All photographers have websites, so the internet could be a good place, you think. Unfortunately, the Internet has no way of discriminating between good and bad, mediocre or uninspired or the simply brilliant.

If you have the budget to afford it, I would strongly recommend finding a designer, a design or branding agency or an advertising agency. But preferably choose a firm who has a proven track record. A design agency, for example, will either have worked with a jewellery photographer previously, or they will have the know-how to select from a few expert photographers in the field.

If you are doing your own search on the Internet, choose a photographer who inspires you, whose website looks professional, someone who knows how to do justice to the jewellery. Your business instinct will probably tell you who is the right photographer for you. I am a strong believer in gut feelings, they are almost always right, particularly when we learn to separate them from other considerations, such as those based on price. You will find vast categories in quality and pricing.

Be very careful not to imitate your competition and not to go for whatever the majority are doing. Seek to distinguish yourself, look beyond your current situation and into the future where you want your business to be. Set yourself a reasonable budget. It is better to have a few outstanding pictures of your jewellery than many mediocre ones. Think, ‘less is more’ as it is almost always true. It is the outstanding pieces, shown to their best, that catch the eye of your prospective customer. You don’t need me to tell you what is outstanding. You will feel it the minute you see it even if you are not a creative or artistic person.

Follow your heart and think: if this image and this piece of jewellery grabs me, it is also likely to grab somebody else. If you are indifferent, or bored and unexcited, other people may also feel like you.

To summarise:

-Set yourself a generous budget. Proper jewellery photography is not cheap, you can’t have both cheap and good. Good photographers are in demand and command higher prices.

-Find yourself a professional designer or design company, they will steer you in the right direction.

-Choose a photographer whose work truly inspires you. Look at his track record, his clients. Meet him in person. Form a business relationship.

-Seek to distinguish yourself from the competition, don’t copy, be innovative and get inspiration from the best.

Jewellery designer: Job description

 Jewellery designers design and often make jewellery using a variety of materials, including gold, silver and precious stones.

They design and plan pieces that can have great sentimental significance or symbolic meaning, can be wearable or are decorative artefacts in their own right.

Designers must be able to relate well to their clients in order to understand design specifications, as well as master the creative and practical skills needed to make a product.

Designers can produce designs for mass production or can make small numbers of objects or individual pieces commissioned by a client.

Some jewellery designers focus more on design, using specialist companies to provide the different stages of the making process.

The majority of jewellery designers are self-employed so also require commercial awareness, marketing and business skills.

Typical work activities

For a self-employed jewellery designer, design activities include:

  • holding consultations with commissioning clients;
  • discussing a client’s range of options and formulating original ideas;
  • sketching out ideas, sometimes using computer-aided design (CAD), to help the client visualise the finished design.

Making activities include:

  • mounting - making the framework for the piece of jewellery. This involves handling, forming and drilling metal, and opening out holes in which to place the selected gems;
  • model making (casting) – making an object or decorative detail using a mould;
  • stamping and presswork;
  • chasing - making a raised pattern on the surface of the metal;
  • soldering and fabrication;
  • polishing - ensuring the finish of the piece.

The following specialist processes may be performed by jewellery designers, but often pieces of work are sent on to companies (outworkers) for these processes to be completed:

  • stone setting – making adjustments to the mount to ensure the stones fit perfectly. This can involve very intricate work, such as removing tiny fractions of metal;
  • electro-plating – layering a precious metal onto a base metal;
  • enamelling - fusing powdered glass to metal in a kiln to create coloured patterns and pictures;
  • welding - joining pieces of metal using traditional methods or by laser;
  • engraving - carving lettering or patterns into precious metals by hand or by computer-aided manufacture.

Promoting and developing the business is crucial for success as a self-employed jewellery designer. Many designers try to boost their reputation by networking, entering competitions and attending craft fairs.

Other activities include consulting with galleries, store buyers and suppliers, and researching jewellery and fashion trends.

When working for a company the jewellery designer produces designs that are then made by other members of staff.

For centuries, the art of making jewellery has been the monopoly of traditional ‘kaarigars’ or goldsmiths who have inherited the expertise from their ancestors and have played the dual role of designer and manufacturer. During those days, jewellery designing as a career had been limited to the kaarigars and one could learn this profession only by becoming an apprentice to an experienced jeweller.

But today with the explosion in the fashion and accessories arena, the field is becoming a lucrative career which offers a sparkling future for those who are fascinated by gems and jewellery. A new breed of jewelry designers and professionals like gem appraisers are in great demand with the growing market for branded ornaments.
